About Samanta
Lampton Road after eleven is mostly taxis and wheeled suitcases, and Samanta arrives among them without any fuss whatsoever. She is 174 cm and slim, with long dark brown hair and brown eyes, and a composure that survives a hotel lobby at midnight intact. She wears one colour at a time, usually a dark one, and she is never overdressed for the building she happens to be standing in.
Late twenties, English speaking, measured. She has a low voice and uses it economically, and she is properly good at the part of an evening when nothing in particular is happening. She played the violin seriously once and badly now, and she will explain the difference between those two things at some length if you let her. She is unbothered by an odd hour and she has never yet made anybody feel late.
The larger hotel further up Lampton Road is a two minute walk from Hounslow Central station, which makes it the practical choice for anybody in from a late flight who does not fancy a night out by the perimeter fence. She knows the lobby, the lift and the fact that the kitchen closes earlier than the website suggests, so she will either eat with you beforehand or bring something with her. She lives in Mayfair and comes out on the Piccadilly line, fifty minutes, which she calls the most reliable fifty minutes in London after nine at night.
Late arrivals are her speciality and always have been. Station walks and hotel notes are set out on the Hounslow Central page, and a message to booking finds her.

Booking Samanta
Midnight starts are normal rather than exceptional for her, and she would rather know the flight number than the time you think you will land. An overnight at £1,800 is the sensible booking after a long flight.
Every figure she works to is printed on the fare board, and the four steps from message to doorbell sit on the booking page.

An evening with Samanta
Half past eleven, the lobby on Lampton Road, and a woman reading in an armchair who looks as though she has been comfortable there for an hour. She will not ask about the flight, because she has met enough late arrivals to know that nobody wants to describe one twice.
Upstairs the pace drops immediately. She is the calmest company on this list at that hour, and she has an unhurried way of talking that makes one in the morning feel like nine in the evening. If you want to sleep she will say goodnight without any performance about it. If you want to talk until it gets light she is entirely willing, and she is genuinely interesting at three.
Samanta, on the record
Q.01Is midnight too late to ask?
It is my usual hour. The line runs until around half twelve and right through on a Friday and Saturday, so a late arrival is not the problem people assume it is.
Q.02Why Lampton Road rather than the airport hotels?
Because it is a two minute walk from a tube station and a real town rather than a service road. You can find food at eleven here, which is more than the perimeter can say.
Q.03Do you still play?
Badly, and only at home. Fifteen years of practice means I can hear exactly how bad it is, which is the cruellest part of having once been good at something.
