About Rosa
Riverside in Twickenham floods on a big tide, and Rosa finds that funny rather than inconvenient. She is 160 cm and curvy, with long chestnut brown hair that curls hard in damp weather and brown eyes that are warm before she has said anything at all. She dresses softly and a little bit vintage, and she is permanently slightly too cold, which is why she ends up borrowing coats and returning them smelling of her perfume.
Mid twenties, English speaking, comfortable company from the first minute onwards. She is the one who ends up talking to the family at the next table and knowing their holiday plans by the time the plates are cleared. Food matters to her enormously and she refuses to be hurried through a meal by anybody. She is the sort of person who turns up with something for you: a paper bag of pastries, a book she has finished with, an opinion about your coat.
The White Swan is on Riverside, an eighteenth century pub with a garden that the Thames reclaims a few times a year, and when the tide is up you cross the causeway on a plank or you wait for it to go down again. She books the table upstairs, times the evening against the tide table, which she genuinely checks, and afterwards it is a short walk along to Church Street. She lives in Marylebone: Waterloo and thirty minutes, and she would rather come out early and stay late than do the reverse.

Three in the afternoon on a Sunday, which is when this stretch of river is at its best: dogs, prams, somebody's birthday in the garden and the water coming up the steps. She will have checked whether the causeway is passable and she will be pleased if it is not.
A table upstairs, a long lunch that turns into an early dinner, and a walk to Church Street afterwards when the light goes. She talks to everybody and somehow it never feels like she has left you out of it. By eight she is deciding whether to catch the train or stay for one more, and she is always honest about which she would prefer. Nothing about the afternoon was arranged and all of it works.

Q.01Do people really get cut off by the tide?
Every few weeks, and the pub finds it hilarious. There is a causeway to Eel Pie Island beside it and the water covers the road for an hour or so. Nobody is in danger, they are just stuck with another drink.
Q.02Lunch or dinner?
Lunch that forgets to end. Three in the afternoon until eight at night is my favourite booking and the river looks best across exactly those hours.
Q.03What should I not do?
Rush me through a meal. If there is a table booked somewhere else at nine, tell me first, and I will eat at a speed that respects it.
